Safety-net and track FIT tests

A step by step guide on how to use C the Signs to safety-netting FIT tests. Track FIT test results and the IIF indicator using the FIT view.


  • C the Signs provides a robust safety-netting system in your practice for FIT. It will allow you to track FIT requests, view FIT results and action raised FIT results. 
  • You can also track your progress in reaching the Investment and Impact Fund (IIF) for FIT within your practice and PCN through C the Signs.

How do I safety-net a FIT test using C the Signs?

b) Through a risk assessment 

  • When completing a cancer risk assessment using C the Signs, a FIT test may be recommended to the clinician. 
  • If this risk assessment with a FIT plan is saved into the notes, the FIT test will also be automatically safety-netted onto the C the Signs Dashboard.

c) Add the FIT test directly to the safety-netting Dashboard

  • You can directly add a FIT test that has been requested to the C the Signs safety-netting Dashboard. See here for more information.

FIT safety-netting shortcut: Step by step guide

Step 1

  • Click the 'Patient' button on the C the Signs toolbar and select 'FIT Safety-netting'.

Step 2 

  • The FIT safety-netting page will open (see screenshot below).
  • Review relevant codes and add clinical details in the notes section
  • Send an information leaflet to the patient explaining how to complete a FIT test. 

Step 3

  • Click on 'Submit and Send'. Relevant codes and clinical information will be saved into the patient's medical record.
  • The FIT test has now also been safety-netted automatically onto the C the Signs Practice Dashboard.

Please ensure you request the FIT through your pathology service, as per your usual workflow.


How to track patients using the FIT View

  • All FIT tests safety-netting using C the Signs will be found on your practice Dashboard within the FIT View. 
  • Follow the steps below to learn more about using the FIT View. 

Step 1: Launch Dashboard

  • Click on the 'Dashboard' button of the C the Signs toolbar. Images with Yellow Highlight_Image 1-Dashboard-Text
  • The dashboard will open on the 'Active' board. 

Step 2: Select FIT View

  • Select the 'View: FIT' option at the top of the page in the middle of your screen. See the button highlighted below. 

Step 3: Review & Track

  • The FIT View tracks patients with FIT tests, and/or lower GI urgent cancer referrals.

  • Check if the FIT test results are back. You can use this information to chase outstanding FIT tests or action results as appropriate. 

If you are a SystmOne user, click on the 'Update' button in the top right of the page to update the Dashboard with new results from the medical record. EMIS users do not need to complete this step, results are pulled through automatically. 



Filtering information on the FIT View

Step 1: Open the FIT View

  • Open the C the Signs dashboard using the second button on the toolbar. The Active tab will open. Choose View: FIT as shown in the steps above.

 

Step 2: Select 'Filters' 

  • Click on the 'Filters' button found in the top left of the screen and select how you would like to filter the information on the FIT View. 
  • For example, you can filter by 'Referrer' if you would like to view patients added by a particular clinician. Or, you can select to view patients who have had a FIT requested but no results have been received. 
     

If it has been some time between FIT test requested and there is no result on the dashboard then you may wish to remind that patient to complete their FIT.


Actioning FIT results

Step 1: Open the FIT View

  • Open the C the Signs dashboard using the second button on the toolbar. The Active tab will open. Choose View: FIT as shown in the steps above.

Step 2: Select an Outcome

  • Accurately track the outcome of each FIT test so no patients are missed to follow up. 
  • Click 'Select' in the Outcome column and chose the appropriate option. This includes a Lower GI referral. 

  • If 'Lower GI referral' is selected as the outcome of the FIT test, you will be given the option to complete the form through C the Signs directly from the FIT View.

The Lower GI urgent suspected cancer referral will need to be sent via e-RS as per usual workflow. 


Investment and Impact Fund (IIF) for FIT

  • The indicator for FIT testing has been included in the 2024/25 IIF requirements and remains the same as the previous year.

FIT IIF Indicator: Percentage of lower GI fast track cancer referrals accompanied by a FIT test result, with the result recorded in the 21 days leading up to the referral.

  • Use the C the Signs FIT View to track if eligible patients are meeting the IIF indicator for FIT testing. 

Step 1: Open the FIT View

  • Open the C the Signs dashboard using the second button on the toolbar. The Active tab will open. Choose View: FIT as shown in the steps above.

Step 2: Find the IIF column

  • Use the IIF column (last column on the right hand side of the page) to see if eligible patients have met the IIF indicator for FIT testing.
